Tattoos can be extremely personal and important to an individual. This means that, for some people, the tattoo has to be exactly what they have always hoped and dreamed of. This is where a potentially crucial step in the tattoo process comes in: the consultation. This is an informal chat between artist and client in order to give them some time to understand each other, ensuring that the final artwork aligns with the client’s vision and the artist’s expertise. Let’s delve into what happens during a tattoo consultation.
Who needs a consultation?
Upon enquiring with our reception team or the artist directly, they may think it is best for you to have a consultation. This could be because your tattoo is complex; you want a cover up or lots of elements in one tattoo. You are also more than welcome to request a consultation. The client may request one before booking to give them an opportunity to really get to know and trust the artist.
Visualising your tattoo
The artist may ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of their client’s preferences. They will ask about things such as style, size, placement, and colour palette. Of course, it is okay if you’re unsure about any of these, your artist can provide insights into how certain design elements translate onto the skin. For example, they can advise on how big the tattoo will need to be in order to include all of your ideas. You can bring a rough sketch along to your consultation to help the artist understand the vision – don’t worry if you’re no picasso!
Addressing Concerns
Tattoos are permanent, so it’s natural for clients to have concerns. Whether it’s about pain, aftercare, or the longevity of the design, the consultation is the perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions (remember: there are no silly ones!) and let the artist know about any apprehensions. Experienced tattoo artists are adept at addressing these concerns, offering reassurance and practical advice to alleviate any worries.
Setting Expectations
During the consultation, the artist discusses the estimated duration of the tattoo and the number of sessions required for completion (if applicable), they will also let you know roughly how much it will cost. It is important to note that your artist will not draw the final design during the consultation. They will listen to all of your ideas and information, then take this away and work on a final piece that you will see at the start of your appointment.
Post consultation
Following the consultation, should you choose to proceed with the new tattoo, the artist or receptionist will coordinate with you to schedule an appointment. They will find some dates that suit both your availability and the artist’s. Then, a deposit will be collected, securing your booking for the tattoo appointment.
